CASTLE OF THE WALKING DEAD
Christopher Lee is well known for the role of Dracula in many European horror films of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. He symbolized what Count Dracula was to become in the post-Bela Lugosi era. He spent much of his time starring in many of Hammer's celebrated series of horror films. However, it was in 1967 that he starred as a vengeful ghoul in Harald Reinl's Castle of the Walking Dead (aka Blood Demon), starring Karin Dor and Lex Barker.

The notoriously evil Count Regula was sentenced and quartered for the sacrificial murder of 12 maidens. Decades later, he has been resurrected by his zombie-like servant in order to claim his 13th victim and complete an ancient religious rite that will give him everlasting life.

He vows revenge against the descendants of the people who convicted him. The Baroness Lillian Von Brabant, the daughter of his rescued final victim before Regula's execution, and Roger Montellise, the son of the man who sentenced him, are the targets of his revenge. They are both oblivious to their heritage, because they were sent away to be raised for the sake of their safety.

Regula sends each of them a letter from his estate, requesting their presence at his castle, with a promise to give them missing information about their pasts. They both set out for the castle separately, and end up traveling together due to the Baroness' coach coming under siege by highwaymen. They are accompanied by the Baroness' maid and a would-be priest (who turns out to be a robber).

They find themselves on a trail in the middle of a deserted forrest where the trees are littered with hanging, dead bodies. Their coach driver dies of a heart attack, and they make their way on foot to Regula's castle. They are greeted by Regula's zomboid servant, and are subjected to horrifying ordeals. Snake pits, traps and terrible death devices are among the horrors they endear, as the Baroness is prepared for sacrifice and Roger taken away for execution.

Roger escapes the pendulum as Regula has the Baroness on the sacrificial table. The evil count must complete the rite before midnight or he will return to a state of death. Roger arrives at the altar with a cross in his hand. It must be enough to stave off the count before the stroke of midnight.....
Castle of the Walking Dead is an unusual film for its time in that it contains a great deal of bizarre imagery. Horrible images of hanging corpses against a dark and foggy, wooded backdrop, dungeon walls made up of human skulls and skeletons appear to the eye like dark paintings from ages past. Such images have been replicated in other horror films, and even in some big-budget adventure movies. Fans of classic European horror films will find Castle of the Walking Dead to be an interesting chapter in Christopher Lee's career.

Other horror films starring Christopher Lee:

Curse of Frankenstein
Dracula, Prince of Darkness
Horror Express

The Satanic Rites of Dracula
