MEET THE FEEBLES

94 Min. 1989. 1.33:1.

Directed by Peter Jackson

A debatable subject when it comes to genre films is the film that has earned itself the title of "the weirdest and most over-the-top film ever made." Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles, a gory, violent and graphic puppet movie, is no doubt a top contender. Substance released this film for the first time during the early days of DVD when collectors were tracking down Japanese laserdiscs for uncut, widescreen and unavailable titles.

It's a make-or-break world premiere for the Feebles Variety Hour, a show starring all sorts of talented and quirky animals. There is a neurotic elephant who trains odd, living furballs, a spacy and eccentric fox who directs the show, a heroin-addict Vietnam veteran knife-thrower of a Frog, a muckraking Fly who writes for the gossip tabloids, a sleazy, drug-pushing rat who works for the producer-mob boss who owns the Feebles, a rabbit with what appears to be a deadly disease who hosts the show, and the star of the show - a past-her-prime, overweight hippo singer with a complex. Those are just the main characters.

Robert, a goody-goody hedgehog, has joined the cast and is trying to win the heart of a poodle who sings backup for one of the acts. Heidi, the hippo, is trying to overcome her obsession with eating while attempting to prove that she still has what it takes to be a star to her boyfriend, Bletch, the walrus (the producer/mob boss). All this plus several subplots lead to the outlandish climax involving Heidi and a machine gun!

Substance presents Meet the Feebles 1.33:1. The image is relatively fuzzy and appears to have been from a videotape master. The colors are faded and the image is a bit soft. The mono sound is audible, yet not stellar. There are no extras on this disc, much like Substance's old Bad Taste disc.

A film that stands out from the rest, Meet the Feebles has received very limited exposure on Region One DVD. Even though many fans were delighted to get this film at a reasonable price without subtitles (which was once an annoying aspect of collecting uncut/widescreen versions of movies otherwise unavailable or only available cut in North America), a major re-mastered release of this film is desperately needed.
