ALL MONSTERS ATTACK!
Even though many science fiction monster films have premiered in theaters or at the drive-in, they usually found a new home through either middle-of-the-night television airings or on Saturday afternoon horror shows. Before the age of home video, such films were aired fairly frequently, often finding themselves re-broadcast week after week with alternate titles. All Day Entertainment has pieced together a nearly two-hour collection of trailers for classic monster movies in All Monsters Attack: All Plastic DVD Kit.
All Monsters Attack is an incredible collection of trailers, clocking in at nearly 116 minutes. The presentation begins with the classic RKO ape films starring King Kong and Mighty Joe Young, works its way into a variety of kaiju eiga with the likes of Godzilla and Gammera and ends up with a crop of classic 50s and 60s science fiction along with Ray Harryhausen favorites.
The trailers on this compilation are more complete than other trailer tapes/DVDs, but trailers like King Kong Vs. Godzilla are still not as long as the version on the old Hollywood Dinosaurs VHS. Many kaiju favorites are missing from this disc, such as Godzilla Vs. Megalon (as seen on an old episode of Night Flight), Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla, The Invasion of the Astro Monster/Monster Zero, War of the Gargantuas, Frankenstein Conquers the World (also found on the Hollywood Dinosaurs VHS), Godzilla Raids Again/Gigantis: The Fire Monster and Godzilla on Monster Island.
The film quality varies from trailer to trailer. This is to be expected due to the source and age of different prints. In addition, the aspect ratios are dependent on their source. Some of the trailers contain scratches, dust or splices; although these traits would be the subject of a harsh DVD critique, all is overlooked because the charm of a trailer is partially defined by the fact that its image has been slightly marred by being previewed by a movie-going audience. Even though the film quality may be imperfect, the VIDEO quality is without video dropouts and videotape horizontal rolls/lines. The mono sound quality is as good as the source it came from, and is on-par with the video quality.
Extras include amusing "making-of" featurettes for The Land That Time Forgot and The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (the same "This is Dynamation" featurette included on the Fantastic Dinosaurs of the Movies DVD by Goodtimes). There is also the newsreel Operation Plumbbob, a nuclear safety film. The last of the extras is the comedic animation short Megamorphosis. Based on Franz Kafka's short story, Metamorphosis, this film deals with a man who wakes up one morning finding himself transformed into Godzilla. All Monsters Attack is a science fiction fan's dream. 60 rare genre trailers that are sure to please, this disc allows anyone to have a taste of the midnight airing or Saturday afternoon television horror show any time they want.
